the president's made in both of the taerms. he is controversial and stands for something. you know, chuck hagel's someone who i have known since 2007 when we were arguing against a troop increase in iraq and i can tell you on a personal level especially reading his book he cares what happens to the soldier or the marine on the ground embedded in combat and i think in afghanistan with green on blue killings, a question of projection of force and embedded with afghan troops, this is someone to say is this worth the sacrifice and there was a large debate in washington, d.c. prior to the increase of troops in afghanistan and hagel quietly was on the side that was against the president's plan of sending more troops and i think he looks right and this isn't just a shot, you know, lindsey graham calls it in your face sort of announceme announcement. it is in your face to neo-conservatives and dems and republicans because this is a realism argument that people like i believe or control knell schafer and nation building interventionists who think we should fight wars for democracy in the far end corners

of president obama in introducing hagel and announcing his nomination is that hagel has a particular unique experience in the military as an enlisted ground pounder. one who fought the war in vietnam and as the president pointed out still carries shrapnel in the chest. twice wounded, two purple hearts. he has as the president said understands the consequences of war so he would be less likely than some previous secretaries in this job to commit troops to war that some might consider unnecessarily. now, i'll take a little bit of exception in my colleagues at first read who claim that the president chose him because hagel could not be intimidated by the generals. i have not covered any secretary of defense who is intimidated by the generals. they take the best advice from the military leadership and they, in turn, walk arm and arm over to the white house, give it to the president and that's where those kinds of decisions are made. but i can tell you, one of the biggest challenges facing chuck hagel if, in fact, he is confirmed by the senate, is this budget battle. not necessarily here in the

expected to be former nebraska senator chuck hagel. it is expected president will are make that announcement in the next couple of days. how will vow jet on hagel? >> it he is nominated it is difficult to imagine a circumstance in which i could support his nomination. the president seems bound and determined to proceed down this path despite the fact that hagel's record is very troubling on the nation of israel. he has not been a friend to israel and in my view the united states should stand unshakeably with the nation of israel and he has consistently advocated weakness with respect to our enemies. with respect to the nation of iran he has opposed sanctions over and over again and the job of the secretary of defense is to b be a serious credible strength and deterrent and unfortunately i think weakness in a secretary of defense invites conflict because bullies don't respect weakness. the problem withb lem with hagel on the issue of israel? >> he has rehe peteedly placed all of the blame on israel in dispute after dispute and dispute and in fact publicly said u.s. policy is

hagel for defense secretary as early as tomorrow. when senator hagel left the senate in 2008, you praised his clear voice and stature on foreign policy and national security. do you stand by that praise? >> well, whoever is nominated for secretary of defense is going to have to have a full understanding of our close relationship with our israeli allies, the iranian threat and the importance of having a robust military. so whoever that is i think will be given a thorough vetting, and if senator hagel is nominated, he'll be subjected to the same kind of review of his credentials as anyone else. >> several of your colleagues have come out against his appointment saying he's not sufficiently supportive of israel or tough enough on iran among other issues. do you share their concerns? >> well, i'm going to take a look at all the things that chuck has said over the years and review that and in terms of his qualifications to lead our nation's military. >> but do you still believe he has the stature on foreign policy and national security to be secretary of defense? >> well, he certainly
